He Asked

Waking up with a smile on my face
Never knew it was possible
But I woke up with a smile on my face
I was happy
"Give me your hand" he asked last night
With his ever so gentle voice
So I did.
He lightly guides my right hand over his left with his left thumb over my palm to secure.
"Close your eyes" he asked
His voice softened almost to a whisper.
His tone was so comfortable. Safe.
As I close my eyes I began to wonder if he was going to kiss me.
Before I can finish my thought I felt his lips on my mouth ever so softly.
He was careful as if I was delicate.
He was not hurried.
His lips were honest and sincere.
I woke up with a smile on my face.
Now I know its possible
I woke up with a smile on my face this morning.
I still feel happy :D

Priscilla T. Daza English 52 Where are you going, where have you been?

Where are you going, Where have you been? is a story about a 15 year old girl name Connie. It simply commences with the relationship Connie has with her mother. It describes Connie as a pretty girl who believed that being pretty was everything. Now, I believe the story was well written. I enjoyed the detailed descriptions throughout the story. Everything I imagined in my head as I was reading was vivid. I find it interesting how Oates would describe everything single thing from the way Connie spoke down to the way Arnold Friend was standing. It was intriging how Oates describe Arnold Friend's voice on paragragh 27 as "She recognized all of this and also the singsong way he talked, slightly mocking, kidding, but serious and a little meloncholy..." I find it contradicitng and difficult to understand how a person's voice can sound mocking, kidding, serious and meloncholy all at once. My favorite about that description is how she described Arnold Friends voice singsong. For some reason that jsut blew my mind. But thats just whats great about Oates form of writing. Professor Hsiao warned us on Wednesday how this story can be weird. I just took it as another form of wierd like its off or something. The thing is the story was strange. I think Hsiao even said it was creepy and it was in the sense that Arnold Friend knew all of Connie's information from the names of her friends down to where her parents where at that Sunday. What bothered me the most was how Connie just stood by the screen door. It certainly did not keep me from continuing to read more. She should not have gone to open the screen door in the first place. See I was raised not to open the doors, I was raised to peek through the windows and stay quiet. I understand that Connie was 15 and there would be no point to the story if she had not been pushing the screen door open and close. Okay that is fine. It was just creepy and strange. Aronold Friend would say how he was Connie's lover and he will hold her tight so ehe will not get away was insane. What a way to make someone feel uncomfortable. Its disturbing for a young girl to here that from strange, older man. The ending of the story left me hanging. After reading it I said out loud, "There must be some mistake. There has to be more to the story." Point is the story was intense and well it kept me interested. I dont know about anyone else.

Priscilla T. Daza English 52 Cathedral

Cathedral was enjoyable to read in my opinion. I could not help but notice how Raymond Carver wrote the story. I noticed there was a lot of short sentences that could have been combined as one whole sentence. For instance in the very beginning Carver writes "His wife died. So he was visiting the dead wife's relatives in Connecticut. He called my wife from his in-law's. Arrangements were made. He would come by train, a five hour trip, and my wife would meet him at the station." I feel he could have easily wrote "His wife died. As he was visiting his in-laws in Connecticut he phoned my wife making arrangements to pick him up at the train station." I also notice he used one word sentences just to get his thought across. For example, after Carver breaks down how much the blind man gets from his dead wife's life insurance he writes, "Pathetic." There was a few others but I guess thats just the form of writing Carver was going for. What I understood from this story is that there will always be a first impression made on someone and at times, will be altered at the end once one gets to know that person a little better. The reason being is because the man was not comfortable with the blind guy coming over, let alone staying the night. After smoking cannabis and going through that intense moment when they were drawing the cathedral together, the man felt comfortable with the blind man. It shows how one can learn from someone dispite their age or disablity.
